Lately I've been having a drawing slump, so I've spent my free time reading in an effort to both recharge my vocabulary and creativity.
I just got finished ready Darkly Dreaming Dexter, and if you've ever seen the series and not read the book, ( I've only seen season one thus far ), you're really cheating yourself out of a good, simple yet complex story, in my opinion.
The series, while AMAZING, is a far cry from Jeff Lindsay's actual story. I won't give anything away, but if you can get a copy from the library or find a used copy somewhere, check it out.
It's also an easy read with clear language, so this is something you can take to to the beach or read at work during your lunch break without feeling like you're never going to get past chapter one. Lindsay is a master at describing things without using a thousand words to do so. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy wordy novels, but every now and then I like something I can just breeze through.
There are three Dexter novels: Darkly Dreaming, Dearly Devoted Dexter and Dexter in the Dark. I'm about to start Dearly Devoted. I seriously might end up buying this triology!
Another book I just finished that I would highly recommend is Water for Elephants. It's set in the depression era, and chronicles the memoirs of a former circus veterinarian. That's all I really want to tell about the book, as any other details would spoil the whole thing. You can get a copy for about $12 at Wal Mart or Target. Again, this is an easy read; I finished mine in a day.
I also have this book about the scandal surrounding John Singer Sargent and the infamous Madame X portrait. I might read that before the Dexter novels. If you're not familiar with JSS or Madame X, do a google search. Any serious artist should study Sargent's work, in my opinion.
Other books I have read in the past few weeks have been Garden Spells ( a Southern like water for chocolate ), The Nanny Diaries ( which seemed like a kid-care version of the Devil wears Prada ) and Aesop's fables.
I'm looking forward to reading the Twilight books, as well as Love, Stargirl, which is the sequel to Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl. I also want to read the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
In other news, I've been catching up on my anime. Rumiko Takahashi's Mermaid Saga is amazing. The Anime follows the manga to a T, but that doesn't matter to me because I love the stories. If you've got Netflix, check them out. You won't be disappointed.
I have some Stop-Motion how to videos coming in the mail and I'm excited about that. Also got registered for school. I'm taking Acting for Animators, Drawing from the Imagination and Art and Ideology of the 20th Century. Plus I have my mid-point review in the Fall. It's going to be a fun semester!
As far as work goes, I'm thinking about going down to part time, though I'm greedy and don't want to give up a full time slot. I just need more time for my studies.
And that's all I have to say!
